A much needed update from Twitter.

For years now, since you could use the '@' character attached to a Twitter username to mention (converse with, reply to) that user, the characters in @username would use up some of the 140 available in tweet.   

The more users you included, the more space would get used up, leaving less space for actually saying anything.

This limited both the number of people you could include in a conversation stream and how much you could say.
