'School Ceasefire' Over, Fighting Returns to Previous Levels, Says OSCE Mission's Hug
"The so-called "school ceasefire" signed to enable families to get read for the first day of school (September 1) only brought a pause, not an end to fighting -- but now it is back up to previous levels, said Alexander Hug, first deputy head of the OSCE's Special Monitoring Mission in Ukraine at a briefing, Ukrainska Pravda reported.

Said Hug:

"On Friday [August 29], after the first days of the ceasefire pledge, the mission recorded a 53% reduction in the number of violations by comparison with the previous days...On the next day there was a further reduction in violations.

But on Sunday [August 27], the number of violations of the ceasefire regimen recorded by the mission once again began to grow. There were 151 violations recorded on Sunday; 173 on Monday, 431 on Tuesday, 186 on Wednesday; and the pause [in shelling--UP] was over."

Hug said the mission also noted 112 instances of heavy armor placed in volation of the agreement to withdraw it, 47 in government-controlled areas and 65 in the areas not under Kiev's control."

The Ukrainian side of the Joint Centre for Coordination and Control said Russia-backed forces violated the ceasefire from the moment in was declared, Ukrainska Pravda reported.

Today, September 1, Ukrainian positions were attacked 20 times. On the Lugansk line, militants opened fire on Stanitsa Luganskaya, Krymskoye and Zholtoye.

On the Donetsk line, militants fired on Avdeyevka, Zaytsevo, Mayorsk and the Butovka mine.

On the Mariupol line, they attacked Ukrainian positions near Vodyanoye.

There were no casualties.
