Mariupol, Donetsk, And Lugansk Sectors All See Heavy Fighting

On Wednesday, August 9, the Ukrainian military spokesperson Andrei Lysenko gave an urgent report of heavy fighting over the previous 24 hours as Ukraine saw its worst fighting in more than a week. All told, three Ukrainian soldiers were killed and another nine wounded over the previous 24 hours, a significant escalation.

The Ukraine Crisis Media Center reports:

Three Ukrainian servicemen were killed and nine were wounded in action yesterday. “Ukrainian Armed Forces incurred largest losses in Maryinka where two troops died, five were wounded and one serviceman sustained injuries. All casualties were taken to the hospital. Law enforcement agencies are investigating the incident,” informed Ukrainian Ministry of Defense spokesman on ATO Colonel Andriy Lysenko at a press briefing at Ukraine Crisis Media Center. One Ukrainian serviceman was killed in militants’ attack near Vodiane. Three other troops were wounded in militants’ attacks at Kriakivka, Novooleksandrivka, and Shyrokyne.

Near Avdeyevka, in Donetsk sector, the Russian-backed fighters reportedly used mortars 85 times, three to four times more than in previous days.

A similar situation took place in Kamianka and Shakhta Butovka position, where militants fired around 40 mortar rounds. Ukrainian troops responded with fire. “In addition, militants conducted a brief attack with APC mounted weapons at Luhanske,” added the spokesman.

In Lugansk sector the fighting was also intense.

“Militants started shooting with grenade launchers and mortars at Novozvanivka just after midnight. Following this, the ceasefire held in the entire contact line till 15:00, when the enemy started mortaring Troitske,” elaborated Col. Lysenko.  Militants’ fire was the most intense between 21:00 and 00:00 when militants conducted two mortar attacks in Novotoshkivske and Novozvanivka. They also actively used APC mounted weapons at Zolote and Novooleksandrivka, and grenade launchers in Shchastia.

In Mariupol sector, near the Azov Sea, Ukrainian positions came under attack by mortars, artillery, and armored personnel carriers. When returning fire, a Ukrainian weapon misfired and exploded, injuring some of the soldiers who were manning it.
