New Year's Day: Continued Artillery Fire on Ukrainian Towns, 2 Civilians Killed, 2 Wounded
7 years
Ukrainian Ultrarightist Groups March in Memory of Bandera; Protesters Seize LifeNews Camera

New Year's Eve may have brought a slight lull to some areas of combat in southeastern Ukraine, but artillery fire continued overnight in a number of towns, proving that the "ceasefire" and "silence" have little meaning.

According to the Ukrainian ATO [Anti-Terrorism Operation] Press Center, Russian-backed fighters shelled the towns of Trekhizbenka, Nizhneye, Avdiivka, Chermalyk and the outskirts of Nikishino.

Forces clashed in Petrovskoye in Donetsk Region. Mayorsk and Shumiv were also shelled.

The ATO reported December 31 that the separatists were increasing their forces in Donetsk, Debaltsevo, Pervomaysk, Stakhanov and Severodonetsk (translation by The Interpreter):

According to intelligence, both a rotation is taking place and the arrival of new divisions of the RF Armed Forces in Donetsk and other towns. Some of them are outfitted to look like DPR fighters.

The ATO said militants were firing Grads on Chernukhino.

Hennadiy Moskal, governor of Lugansk Region, reported on his web site that as a result of the prolonged shelling of Chernukhino this morning, two homes were destroyed and one burned down. One civilian was killed and two were wounded.

Moskal also reported on loss of power to the region:

An emergency situation has also emerged in one of the hot spots in Ukrainian-controlled territory, Stanitsa Luganskaya. The residents of the town spent New Year's Eve without electricity -- power supply was halted by the LPR ["Lugansk People's Republic"]. The lights went on about 10:00 am, however the central heating system suffered while the electricity was out. Last night it was colder than -20 degrees Celsius, and in areas where the central system did not get water, the pipes burst. Utility services are working on site to determine the scale of the damage and are trying to partially restore central heating.

The mayor's office of Donetsk reported that separatists' positions took mortar fire near the Volvo Center in northwest Donetsk and near the Gagarin Mine.

Meanwhile, the self-proclaimed "Donetsk People's Republic" said Ukrainian forces fired on separatist positions in the area of Gorlovka six times. There has been artillery fire in the areas of coal mine no. 6 and 7.
